Put your solar energy to work. Automatically use excess solar energy to charge your car and power your connected devices.
Harness the full potential of your solar investment with our Excess Solar Management feature. When your solar panels generate more electricity than your home is using, this intelligent system automatically activates your Emporia EV Charger and other connected devices to consume that surplus clean energy on-site.
To get started with Excess Solar Management, you’ll need the following:
Vue Energy Monitor (installed in your electric panel)
Emporia App
One or more connected devices (EV chargers, smart plugs, and more)
Once you activate Excess Solar Management in the Emporia App, our platform does the heavy lifting:
The Vue Home Energy Monitor can track both solar production and home energy consumption in real-time from your electric panel
The system identifies when solar production exceeds home usage, indicating excess solar energy is available
When solar energy is available, connected devices activate based on user preferences and priorities
The system continuously adjusts as solar conditions change throughout the day
When you power your home devices and EV with solar, you avoid paying for high-cost grid electricity. Excess Solar Management maximizes the amount of solar energy you use on property so you can pay for less electricity from the grid and save money on your bills.
Lower your environmental impact by using your own solar energy to run energy-hungry appliances like your EV charger and heating and cooling systems. Instead of using grid energy produced primarily with fossil fuels, Excess Solar Management allows you to tap directly into the solar power you’re already making right on property.
With the Emporia App, setting up and saving with Excess Solar Management is easy. Simply link your Vue monitor and enable your EV Charger and any other connected devices. Once that is done, your EV Charger will start charging whenever you have extra solar production!
Yes, it works with any type of solar panel system that uses a load-side connection, where the solar equipment connects to the main panel on the home side of the meter.
The Vue Home Energy Monitor provides real-time data on both your solar production and your home’s energy consumption. When production is higher than consumption, the system identifies this as excess solar energy.
Yes, the Emporia app allows you to set priorities how your excess solar energy is used across your connected devices.
The following devices can be powered using the Excess Solar Management feature:
Emporia EV Chargers: Can be configured to charge cars only when excess solar power is available
Emporia Smart Plugs: Can be set to turn on when excess solar power is detected
Emporia Home Battery Storage Systems: Can prioritize storing excess solar energy for later use
Compatible third-party smart devices: Works with supported appliances and thermostats
No, your solar panels must be grid-tied to use Excess Solar Management. For off-grid systems or in cases where the utility does not accept back feeding, Excess Solar Management is not supported.
We integrate with thousands of appliances through HomeConnect. We also have the following brands of thermostats integrated:
