The multi-EV household is becoming the new normal. Maybe you started with one electric vehicle and loved it so much that you convinced your partner to go electric too. Or perhaps your teenager is ready for their first car, and you want it to be electric. Either way, you’re facing the same challenge: how do you charge multiple EVs at home without spending thousands on electrical upgrades?
Today, we’re solving that problem with our new Intelligent Load Sharing feature for Emporia EV Chargers.
What Is Intelligent Load Sharing?
Intelligent Load Sharing allows multiple Emporia EV chargers to automatically coordinate charging through our cloud-based platform. Instead of each charger operating independently (and potentially overloading your electrical system), your chargers now communicate with each other to share available power safely and efficiently.
When one car is charging alone, it gets maximum power. Plug in a second car, and they automatically share power, making sure both are ready when you need them. No rewiring, no manual management, no swapping cables at night. Just plug in and charge.
The Problem We’re Solving
Here’s the reality most multi-EV households face: installing a second EV charger typically requires expensive electrical work. You might need a panel upgrade ($5,000 to $10,000), additional circuits ($1,000 to $5,000 per circuit), permits, inspections, and weeks of coordination with electricians and utility companies.
Many homeowners end up with workarounds like sharing a single charger between multiple cars, setting complex charging schedules, or literally moving cars at night to ensure both are charged by morning. These solutions work, but they’re not exactly the convenient home charging experience you thought you were getting.
How Intelligent Load Sharing Solves These Problems
Intelligent Load Sharing transforms your existing electrical setup into a smart charging system that automatically manages power between multiple Emporia EV chargers. The system continuously monitors which vehicles are charging and adjusts power in real time. When one car is charging alone, it gets maximum power. When multiple cars need charging, they automatically share the available power. If one car finishes charging, the remaining vehicles speed up within 30 seconds.
Here’s the key: instead of requiring expensive electrical upgrades, we make your existing system smarter. Your chargers communicate through our cloud platform to coordinate power delivery, ensuring you never exceed your electrical system’s limits while maximizing charging speed for each vehicle.
Installation Options That Fit Your Home
Intelligent Load Sharing works in four different electrical setups, so it can adapt to how your home is wired:
1. EV chargers sharing a single circuit
If you have one circuit that can handle multiple chargers, they’ll automatically divide the available power. This works great when your main electrical panel has plenty of capacity but you don’t want to run expensive additional circuits.
2. Individual circuits for each charger, plus whole-home load management
If each EV charger is on its own circuit but your overall electrical panel is near capacity, Load Sharing works with our PowerSmart feature to make sure your entire home’s usage doesn’t exceed electrical limits.
PowerSmart functionality comes with the Emporia Pro, and can be added on for an additional cost to any Emporia Classic charger. It also requires our Vue Energy Monitor, which comes in the box with the Emporia Pro.
3. Load Sharing + PowerSmart for maximum protection
Use both approaches together. Load Sharing manages power between chargers sharing a circuit, while PowerSmart manages your home’s total electrical usage. This gives you complete protection at every level.
4. Dedicated EV charging sub-panel
If you’ve installed a sub-panel specifically for EV charging with individual breakers for each charger, Intelligent Load Sharing can manage that entire sub-panel’s capacity. This is ideal for households planning multiple EVs or premium installations.
Key Benefits
Save thousands of dollars: Skip electrical panel upgrades and avoid multiple circuit installations. Use the electrical infrastructure you already have.
Zero additional cost: Intelligent Load Sharing is included free with all Emporia EV chargers. No subscription fees, no upgrade charges.
Automatic operation: No schedules to set, no apps to monitor, no cables to swap. The system handles everything automatically.
Future-ready design: Start with two EVs today, add more tomorrow. The system scales with your family’s EV adoption.
Works standalone or combined: Use Load Sharing alone, PowerSmart alone, or both together depending on your electrical setup.
Perfect for More Than Just Homes
While we designed Intelligent Load Sharing with multi-EV households in mind, it’s also transformative for commercial properties:
Workplace charging
Employers can offer EV charging as an employee benefit without running expensive individual circuits to each parking space. Four charging stations on one 100-amp circuit costs 75% less to install than four separate 40-amp circuits.
Multi-family properties
Apartment complexes and condos can add EV charging amenities using existing electrical capacity, with automatic fair-share power distribution between residents.
Hospitality
Hotels and destinations can provide fair-share guest charging without large infrastructure projects.
Getting Started
Intelligent Load Sharing is available and free for all Emporia EV chargers with active internet connections. If you already have multiple Emporia chargers, simply update your Emporia app and create a Load Sharing network.

Requirements:
- Two or more Emporia Level 2 EV chargers (Classic or Pro models)
- Internet connectivity for cloud coordination
- Either shared electrical capacity (same circuit) or a dedicated EV sub-panel
- Minimum 6 amps available per charger
No Vue Home Energy Monitor is required for basic Load Sharing functionality, though combining with PowerSmart provides comprehensive whole-home energy management. Importantly, PowerSmart functionality comes with the Emporia Pro, and can be added on for an additional cost to any Emporia Classic charger. You’ll also need a Vue Energy Monitor for PowerSmart to work (which comes in the box with the Pro charger).
The Bigger Picture
Intelligent Load Sharing represents our commitment to making home energy management simple, affordable, and accessible. We believe understanding and automating your home’s energy usage should be straightforward, not something that requires expensive electrical work or constant manual management.
As electric vehicle adoption accelerates, the multi-EV household is becoming the norm rather than the exception. Intelligent Load Sharing ensures that your home’s electrical infrastructure can grow with your family’s EV adoption, all without breaking the bank.
