How the program works
Emporia owns the battery. At scheduled times, it may send stored energy to help support the Xcel Energy grid. That grid participation is what makes the no-purchase model possible.
If the grid goes down, the battery switches to back up your home. After each grid event, it recharges automatically.

No switches to flip when the grid drops.
When grid power goes out, the battery takes over automatically, fast enough to keep TVs from flickering and clocks from resetting. It works whether you're home or away.
Xcel Energy uses Public Safety Power Shutoffs to manage wildfire risk, and those outages can leave homes without electricity for hours or days. You cannot stop the utility from flipping the switch. You can decide what stays on in your home when they do.
With 60 kWh of capacity, a typical home can keep essential appliances and systems running for roughly one to three days. Actual backup time depends on your energy use, the weather, and system conditions.

The battery charges during lower-cost off-peak hours and helps power your home during higher-cost peak periods, automatically, without anything for you to configure. On Xcel's time-of-use plan, that peak window is typically 5 to 9 p.m. on weekdays. If you have solar, the battery also stores excess generation so more of what your panels produce stays in your home.
The battery installs outdoors, not in your home, garage, or basement. We also install an Emporia Vue 3 Home Energy Monitor in your electrical panel so you can see your home's energy use.
If you already have a gas generator, it works with the battery rather than against it: the battery can start it automatically and draw up to 19.2 kW from it. The battery covers shorter outages, and your generator is still there for the storms that last days.

Emporia owns the battery during the 15-year program term and services it under the program agreement. Eligibility depends on Xcel Energy service, feeder-level qualification for the Grid-Edge offer, customer account standing, property-owner approval where required, and site assessment. The program maintains a 20% reserve. During approximately 60 to 80 scheduled grid events per year, the battery may dispatch energy for up to four hours to support the Xcel Energy grid. The program does not include customer event opt-out. Customers are responsible for incremental electricity costs from dispatch, including non-net-metered export and round-trip efficiency losses, as well as electricity used for normal battery operation, self-consumption, and temperature control.
